For gamers everywhere, E3 is another Christmas. Some of the most respected publishers and developers show up to showcase one thing: video games. Companies like Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft and developers like Bethesda host press conferences or live streams to reveal upcoming games. It’s an absolute blast, and we look forward to it every year.
Of course, like every year, we’re always expecting to see an update on an anticipated game. Sometimes those games make an appearance. However, unfortunately for us, sometimes they don’t, which leaves us in a slightly depressing mood.
In the next couple of slides, we’ll discuss four of those games. These are games we were hoping we would see at the convention but ended up as no-shows. These games may have been revealed already, they may have been rumored, or we may simply haven’t heard anything about them.
4. Animal Crossing
This may not be at the top of everyone’s list. However, there’s no denying that a proper game in the series is long overdue. If you really think about it, Animal Crossing hasn’t gotten its fair due since 2001 when it made its debut on the Nintendo 64.
That is, by far, the greatest game in the series yet. We have seen other fun releases on other consoles, such as Wild World on the DS, City Folk on the Wii and New Leaf on the 3DS. Let this sink in, though: the last two Animal Crossing game releases were Happy Home Designer and Amiibo Festival. Both received unfavorable reviews.
It’s time for this game to make a comeback and the Nintendo Switch is the perfect console for it. As Animal Crossing is a community simulator, we feel the Switch would be a great console for playing this type of game. Think of Stardew Valley, which is coming to the Switch with an online multiplayer mode. Those games are very similar in the sense that they both deal with simulation.
Not only would it thrive as a single-player game, but you can take the console on the go and link up with other players. It would make for some great times.
Maybe Nintendo is working on a new installment, but unfortunately, we didn’t see it at E3 2017.
3. Final Fantasy VII remake
Another E3 has passed and so has the Final Fantasy VII remake. It’s unfortunate since we’ve really wanted to see some new footage on the game for quite some time now. Final Fantasy VII is arguably the greatest in the entire series. It contains the most memorable characters by far, the story is incredible and the gameplay is a ton of fun.
There’s a reason why this game is being remade for an all new generation of gamers. In the current state of the video game industry, most developers are starting to remake certain classic games. Not only can old gamers return to the game and play it in an all new way, but new gamers can experience it for the first time as well.
We were willing to bet money that a new trailer would drop during the PlayStation E3 press conference. Sadly, it didn’t, and it looks like we won’t be seeing something anytime soon. Square Enix recently announced that both the Final Fantasy VII remake and Kingdom Hearts III will be releasing in the next three years. The difference between the two is a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts III was actually released earlier this week.
Still, we would have liked to have seen some sort of update on the remake. Sadly, we have a feeling that we’ll be waiting a long time before we get new details.
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar Games revealed Red Dead Redemption 2 last October. In the first teaser trailer, it was announced the game was launching in fall 2017, which got us very excited. Unfortunately, the game was delayed to spring 2018. This was a huge bummer considering it was one of our most anticipated games of the year.
Our only consolation prize was seeing a new trailer at E3 2017, which we were very confident about. We know that Rockstar usually doesn’t have a big presence at E3. In the past, though, they have shown trailers during other press conferences, like PlayStation. Not only were we pretty shocked to see no footage of Red Dead Redemption 2 during the PlayStation E3 press conference, but we didn’t see anything at all on the game.
The least Rockstar could do for delaying the game is give us some new footage from the game. However, we’re just going to have to wait until later in the year. There’s a possibility we’ll see something at Gamescom or later in the year.
That is, of course, if the game gets delayed once again. At that point, we have no idea what we’ll do with ourselves. The point is, we wanted to see something on the game, especially since it was delayed. Now we’re unsure when we’ll get some new information before it launches next year.
1. The Last of Us Part II
By far, the game we wanted to see at E3 2017 the most is The Last of Us Part II. Very, very sadly, it wasn’t there. After the game was revealed at the PlayStation Experience in December, the hype continued to grow up until E3. We had a gut feeling the game would be a no-show for a variety of reasons, though.
For one, the people behind it did say the game was very early in development. At this point, we still think they’re in the early stages of creating the game. At the very least, if PlayStation was going to show anything, it was yet another teaser of Joel and Ellie. We would have been perfectly fine with that.
Writer Neil Druckmann also gives another reason why. Check it out below:
Believe me, we're super excited to show you more of Ellie and Joel's 2nd journey, but right now it's Chloe and Nadine's time to shine.

As emotional as we may be, this is totally understandable. On the bright side, we have Uncharted: The Lost Legacy to look forward to. It does look awesome. We can’t wait to play it in August.
With the PlayStation Experience returning this year in December, we’re very confident we’ll get something on the game then. If not, there’s always E3 2018, right?
